The Grapes of Wrath: A classic is a classic is a classic!

Posted on 21:22 by Unknown
Last night we watched The Grapes of Wrath on TCM. It was my first time viewing John Ford's powerful film based on Steinbeck's Pulitzer Prize winning masterpiece. Not surprisingly I was deeply moved by the poignant portrayal of the Joad family; the Oklahoma share-croppers' journey to California in search of work during the Great Depression is filled with one hardship after another. The book's ending is darker than the film's where we see the family's survival and determination in the face of so much pain and loss.  I prefer the film version; I think we need that faith and sheer grit to thrive and that the beauty of the human spirit is that we do.
I didn't require quite as many tissues as I did for this year's Les Miserables but I did my fair share of sobbing.

If you haven't seen the film - or seen it in awhile - I heartily recommend it (duh!); it's remarkably timely.

Fonda was nominated for an Oscar in 1940 for his work on the film; he lost the Best Actor to Jimmy Stewart for Philadelphia Story.  When I think of this year's nominees for Best Actor, Daniel Day-Lewis' performance in Lincoln comes closest to capturing the power of Fonda's performance. The fact that they both deal with themes of freedom and man's strength of spirit is no surprise. Great themes. Great writing. Great performances.

Take a look at Henry Fonda delivering some of the most powerful words in the English language in this segment from an AFI tribute.

Don't forget to cast a vote for this year's Best Picture ... the poll is over on the right. Thanks!

The Secret Garden is getting another screen adaptation!

Posted on 00:55 by Unknown
Is it just me or does the thought of another adaptation of The Secret Garden leave you saying why?
Does the fact that Guillermo Del Toro known for Pans Labrynth and the Hellboy films is going to direct with Lucy Alibar writing the script (she wrote acclaimed - and lyrical - Beasts of the Southern Wild) make a difference?
According to Deadline Hollywood Universal is pairing the two on yet another remake of Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic childrens' book.
It may take a filmmaker of Del Toro's imaginative reach to make the sweet story of Mary, the young orphan girl who discovers a secret garden on the grounds of her uncle's manse and nurses it back to health, fresh and new again. Will he set it in the present day or perhaps the future, or will he as Sean O'Neal at AV Club quips, survey the situation and pronounce "I'm just spit-balling here, but what if we put some monsters in the garden?"  Hmmm. What if?   Are there any Secret Garden book fans itching for a remake out there?  Is Del Toro your man?

Charlize Theron Goes to Dark Places

Posted on 23:12 by Unknown
Gillian Flynn is one lucky lady. First we learned that Gone Girl was being adapted by Reese Witherspoon's production company, with Reese starring as Amy. At the time I waxed poetical on the merit of Ryan Gosling being cast as the husband Nick. Now Charlize Theron has signed on to produce and star in another of Flynn's other best sellers, Dark Places. Gilles Paquet-Brenner will write and direct. The French director has written and directed adaptations of novels before; notably Sarah's Key and Pretty Things (Les Jolies Choses in the original French).  My recollection of the Sarah's Key movie starring Kristin Scott Thomas  is that it was so-so; the book was much much better. I haven't read or seen Les Jolies Choses so I can't comment. I also haven't read Dark Places yet so I can't say much about that either. Except that Theron can play tough and I would imagine Libby Day, the protagonist in Flynn's crime thriller is that! Here's the publisher's description from Barnes and Noble. What do you think of Theron as Libby?

I have a meanness inside me, real as an organ.
Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in “The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas.” As her family lay dying, little Libby fled their tiny farmhouse into the freezing January snow. She lost some fingers and toes, but she survived–and famously testified that her fifteen-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, Ben sits in prison, and troubled Libby lives off the dregs of a trust created by well-wishers who’ve long forgotten her. The Kill Club is a macabre secret society obsessed with notorious crimes. When they locate Libby and pump her for details–proof they hope may free Ben–Libby hatches a plan to profit off her tragic history. For a fee, she’ll reconnect with the players from that night and report her findings to the club . . . and maybe she’ll admit her testimony wasn’t so solid after all. As Libby’s search takes her from shabby Missouri strip clubs to abandoned Oklahoma tourist towns, the narrative flashes back to January 2, 1985. The events of that day are relayed through the eyes of Libby’s doomed family members–including Ben, a loner whose rage over his shiftless father and their failing farm have driven him into a disturbing friendship with the new girl in town. Piece by piece, the unimaginable truth emerges, and Libby finds herself right back where she started–on the run from a killer. From the Hardcover edition

Teaser Tuesdays: The Man from Primrose Lane

Posted on 07:35 by Unknown
"Sackett called him the Man with the Thousand Mittens because the old hermit always wore mittens, even in the middle of July. He doubted most people had noticed the old man wore different mittens every time he stepped out of his ramshackle house."
p.6, "The Man from Primrose Lane"  James Renner

I haven't started reading the book yet but I learned last week that Bradley Cooper is going to star in the film version of the book so I'm  planning to do so. What do you think of the teaser?

This teaser from The Man from Primrose Lane is part of this weeks Teaser Tuesdays meme hosted by Ms B at Should Be Reading. Grab a book and play along.

Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks:First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday

Posted on 02:19 by Unknown

Since the screen adaptation of Nicholas Spark's Safe Haven comes out pretty soon - yeah, it's Valentine's Day natch, I thought I'd share the opening to the book for First Paragraph - Teaser Tuesday hosted by Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea.  And for Teaser Tuesday at Should Be Reading

I haven't bought the book yet and unless the opening paragraph and the free sample on my Nook
convince me otherwise, I probably won't. I'm not usually much of a Sparks fan but since the screen adaptation starring Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough does come out on February 14th, I have loads of time to read the book first if you think I should.

Let's take a look and maybe you can give me some advice ...

As Katie wound her way among the tables, a breeze from the Atlantic rippled through her hair. Carrying three plates in her left hand and another in her right, she wore jeans and a T-shirt that read Ivan's: Try Our Fish Just for the Halibut! She brought the plates to four men wearing polo shirts; the one closest to her caught her eye and smiled. Though he tried to act as though he was just a friendly guy, she knew he was watching her as she walked away. Melody had mentioned the men had come from Wilmington and were scouting locations for a movie.
Well?  Should I keep reading the free sample on my Nook?
Should I buy it?  Borrow it?  Or Forget it?

Watch the Safe Haven trailer

P.S.  Don't Forget to Vote in my Best Picture Movie Poll in the upper right corner! Thanks.

Dreaming of France: April in Paris

Posted on 10:39 by Unknown
Who doesn't dream of April in Paris! I know I do and I bet Paulita over at An Accidental Blog does which is why she features her Dreaming of France meme every Monday. To play along, visit Paulita. It's a great chance to share your passion for France.
Unfortunately I won't be landing in Paris this April, but a new film based on a French cult classic novel will be.  Written by Boris Vian in 1947,  L'ecume des Jours, has been translated into English as both Foam of the Daze and Froth of the Daydream and has been adapted for the screen before. Scroll down to see the poster for the film made by Charles Belmont in 1968.

The new film, arrives in France on April 24th. Entitled Mood Indigo when it hits English speaking shores sometime in 2013, the movie brings powerhouse French talents Audrey Tautou, Omar Si and Roman Duris, back together under the direction of Michel Gondry ( Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep, and Be Kind Rewind as well as the poorly received The Green Hornet. )

The synopsis on Dark Horizons is quite a tease! "a world where you can travel around on a pink cloud or literally be swept off an ice skating rink into a hole"

Angie Han at /Film gives us this:
"Vian’s surreal tale revolves around a wealthy young man named Colin, inventor of an “olfactory-musical invention” called the pianocktail. He meets and falls in love with a woman named Chloe, only for her to become ill when she gets a water lily in her lung. The only way for Colin to treat her sickness is by constantly surrounding her with flowers, which eventually drains his funds.Meanwhile, Colin’s married friends Chick and Alise suffer problems of their own when Chick becomes so obsessed with the philosopher Jean-Sol Partre that he begins devoting all of his time, money, and attention to collecting Partre’s books."

According to the publisher,  "L'Ecume des Jours is a jazz fueled Science Fiction story that is both romantic and nihilistic! Vian's novel is an assortment of bittersweet romance, absurdity and the frailty of life. Foam of the Daze is a nimble-fingered masterpiece that is both witty and incredibly moving. It is a story of a wealthy young man Colin and the love of his life Chloe, who develops a water lily in her lung. The supporting cast includes Chick, an obsessive collector of noted philosopher Jean-Sol Partre's books and stained pants, and Nicolas who is a combination of P.G. Wodehouse's fictional butler Jeeves and the Green Hornet's Kato. The soul of the book is about the nature of life disappearing and loving things intensely as if one was making love on a live grenade!"

I can't find a trailer yet but

Now on DVD: Farewell, My Queen

Posted on 00:00 by Unknown

This book sounds fantastic! I wish I'd read it already as it just came out on Blu-Ray and DVD.
Farewell My Queen  Written by Chantal Thomas
It was once the job of Madame Agathe-Sidonie Laborde to read books aloud to Marie-Antoinette. Now exiled in Vienna, she looks back twenty-one years to the legendary opulence of Versailles and meticulously reconstructs July 14, 15 and 16 of 1789. When Agathe-Sidonie is summoned to the Queen's side on the morning of the 14th, Versailles is a miniature universe, sparkling with every outward appearance of happiness and power, peopled with nobles of minutely calibrated rank, and run according to a hundred-year-old ritual called the Perfect Day. But with the shocking news that someone has woken the King in the night, order begins to disintegrate and word of the fall of the Bastille seeps into court. Soon Versailles's beauty is nothing more than a shell encasing rising panic and chaos. Agathe-Sidonie watches as the Queen's attempts to flee are aborted; her most intimate friend betrays her; and the King, appearing to sleepwalk through this crisis, never alters his routine of visiting the Apollo Salon several times a day to consult a giant crystal thermometer. From the tiniest garret to the Hall of Mirrors, where Marie-Antoinette stands alone and terrified in the dark, Chantal Thomas shows us a world on the edge of oblivion and an intimate portrait of the woman who, like "fire in motion," was its center.
I want to read this book, and yes, see the film, if only to discover exactly what the Perfect Day is! And the idea that the whole tale takes place in 3 short days in July - during the fall of the Bastille - adds to my interest.  I haven't been interested in reading historical fiction in quite awhile ... this one has changed my mind!

And here's how they describe the movie on Rotten Tomatoes where critics have given the highly acclaimed art house film a 95% fresh rating. There was a lousy rating on the audience side but I would be surprised if very many folks have even seen it. Farewell, My Queen stars Diane Kruger who I just blogged about as playing the Seeker in the upcoming The Host. Her cool blonde aura and and haughty air help pull off Marie Antoinette in her early, entitled youth. It looks like Ms. Kruger gets a chance to get real as her world begins to crumble.
Farewell, My Queen marks the return of acclaimed director Benoît Jacquot and brilliantly captures the passions, debauchery, occasional glimpses of nobility and ultimately the chaos that engulfed the court of Marie Antoinette in the final days before the full-scale outbreak of the Revolution. Based on the best-selling novel by Chantal Thomas, the film stars Léa Seydoux as one of Marie's ladies-in-waiting, seemingly an innocent but quietly working her way into her mistress's special favors, until history tosses her fate onto a decidedly different path. With the action moving effortlessly from the gilded drawing rooms of the nobles to the back quarters of those who serve them, this is a period film at once accurate and sumptuous in its visual details and modern in its emotions.

What I didn't know, and what the the movie tie-in book cover as well as the movie trailer shows, is that Marie Antoinette played around with bisexuality. Was the girl who quipped let 'em eat cake, the original girl gone wild?!

The Company You Keep... Have you read the book?

Posted on 12:35 by Unknown

Robert Redford's film based on Neil Gordon's book, The Company You Keep, was released in Italy on December 20th of last year...that's the Italian poster on the left.
I may or may not read the book but I really want to see this film. It's the story of a former Weatherman  (the political activists not the guys who tell us it's going to rain) in part because I'm a great admirer of Redford's lifetime of work, both on screen as well as his environmental activism.

The movie will be released in quite a few places before it lands here in the states in 'limited' release on April 5th. It's already been screened at the Venice, Toronto and Stockholm International Film Festivals. I'm lucky that living in Los Angeles almost always means we'll have some chance to see the film on a movie screen as the filmmakers intended! Here's when The Company You Keep comes to a movie theater in your country.
Sweden    18 January 2013
Brazil15 March 2013
Australia28 March 2013
New Zealand4 April 2013
USA5 April 2013(limited)
Portugal11 April 2013

UK7 June 2013
I used to be in love with Robert Redford. Seriously I did. I've probably blogged about how I once sent him a fan letter (my one and only fan letter, ever). I think it was right after The Candidate where he played the idealistic, naive liberal political candidate and at a time when he looked particularly yummy. His fan club sent back an invitation to send a $1 for which I would receive a signed photo. I was furious! I never sent the money of course, but I stayed a fan. He's a little older now and with his fair skin, hasn't really aged that well. The full youthful head of reddish blonde hair contrasted against his more aged facial appearance is disconcerting but I'm still revved up to see what project has inspired him to work again.
Of course, it's a political thriller - this is the synopsis I found on Fandango:
Working from a script by Lem Dobbs, Robert Redford directs and stars in The Company You Keep as Jim Grant, a former member of the Weather Underground who has been hiding out under an assumed identity ever since members of the group participated in a bank heist that ended in a guard's death. When a young reporter figures out the truth, Grant must stay one step ahead of the FBI, who want to bring charges against him for the decades-old murder.
And here's the description from Barnes and Noble:
Set against the rise and fall of the radical antiwar group the Weather Underground, The Company You Keep is a sweeping American saga about sacrifice, the ecstatic righteousness of youth, and the tension between political ideals and family loyalties. When Jason Sinai, one of the last Vietnam-era fugitives still wanted on murder charges for a robbery gone wrong in 1974, encounters a young newspaper reporter in search of a story, he must abandon years of safe underground life for the dangerous life of the road-traveling across America and deep into his past. It is a vivid re-creation of lives lived underground—of battle-scarred veterans, ideologues, profiteers, criminals, and bystanders.
Redford, as director, has stuffed his cast with stunning talent. The young reporter is played by Shia LaBeouf. The rest of the cast includes Julie Christie, Susan Sarandon, Terrence Howard, Anna Kendrick, Sam Elliot, Stanley Tucci, Chris Cooper and Richard Jenkins. Young Jackie Evancho plays Isabel Grant, Jim Grant's granddaughter daughter! (thanks Chuck Yates, for the heads up). Jackie is the little girl who blew everyone away on America's Got Talent.  THOUGHTS?

The Host with the Most? The movie based on Stephenie Meyer's book is almost here

Posted on 17:40 by Unknown

The movie adaptation of The Host is coming 3.29.2013. Despite the change in hair color from palest blond, Saorise Ronan (Hanna, Lovely Bones) still looks almost ethereal and somewhat vulnerable. I guess you would be vulnerable too if the 'wanderer' trapped inside you was fighting for possession of your mind!
Scroll down to see the new posters. Stephenie Meyer's website makes the point that this was the author's first foray into 'adult literature'. She was talking about the distinction between YA and 'adult fiction', she wasn't talking about turning to writing erotica, LOL. Her characters are still primarily youthful and the setting is sci-fi.  It still sounds like YA to me, which isn't a bad thing at all! I don't know the rules, what is YA, what isn't and why, but Ms. Meyer; I think thou dost protest too much  Btw, I know many of you know EXACTLY what the rules are, what does constitute YA.  Please let me know where The Host lands. I'll be eternally indebted.

Here's the book description. We'll see how the movie compares when it comes out in March.

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.
Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.
Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves-Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.
Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, THE HOST is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.

Photo Source: Just Jared and CinemaBlend

This last poster confused me. It looks like it could be Saorise as a slightly older Melanie; the hair is blonde again. But The Host book fans can probably confirm that this is The Seeker, a very unlikeble soul. She's played by Diane Kruger who is probably best known as Abigail Chase in both National Treasure movies. The other guy in the first poster is Jake Abel who plays Ian O'Shea, in love with the wanderer (the one invading Melanie's body).

I don't know if it's YA but it's perked my interest.  It definitely has more appeal to me than any of the Twilight series, none of which I've read or seen ... even though I know some wonderful women, young and old, who are addicted to the series! How 'bout you?

Jennifer Lawrence: When you're hot, you're hot

Posted on 10:44 by Unknown

No question that Jennifer Lawrence is THE hottest young actress right now.  That's the thing about nominations and awards; while they're sometimes wrapped up in politics and popularity, they also can bring necessary focus to products and people of excellence. Such as JLaw's (popularity brings tweetable nicknames) turn in Silver Linings Playbook where she shimmers with authenticity.  Her work earned her a Golden Globe for supporting actress and she's  been suitably nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. Beyond The Hunger Games, Jennifer Lawrence is best known for her outstanding performance in Winter's Bone; I also thought she really stood out in Like Crazy. Timed perfectly to go along with the Hollywood hubbub and hype of award season, the producers of Catching Fire have released new images of  Jennifer and her costars in the upcoming Hunger Games sequel.
Note how the mocking jay pin is on-fire. And we'll see the flames flick when they animate the logo online later this year.

Homer's The Odyssey ... in space?!

Posted on 19:14 by Unknown

No Togas allowed!

What would Homer say if he knew that Warner Brothers was going to set their planned adaptation of The Odyssey in space?  Yes, in space.

The studio has just hired James DiLapo - a recent NYU grad and rising star - to write the script re-imagining the classic (in the truest sense of the word) tale of Odysseus' fight to return home from the wars as a futuristic epic. Back when Brad Pitt starred as Achilles in TROY, (which was really Homer's The Illiad) he was attached to this project too but that's in the past. A shame really. I wouldn't mind seeing Brad Pitt sans toga!

Anything but Miserable!

Posted on 08:30 by Unknown
Les Miz Wins!  Photo Source:Digital Spy
I'm thrilled!  Les Miserables won the Golden Globe for Best Picture in the musical or comedy category with Hugh Jackman taking best performance by an actor and Anne Hathaway best performance by an actress in a supporting role. Anne Hathaway's shoutout to Sally Field was so sweet and heartfelt, one of my favorite moments of the show.  Silver Linings Playbook, another of my favorite films of the year, based on a book or otherwise, earned the very poised Jennifer Lawrence, a best actress statue. The Globes don't break down their screenplay award into 'adapted' and 'original' like the Academy Awards do; they gave the prize to Quentin Tarantino. I was rooting for Silver Linings Playbook for David O. Russell's superb adaptation. It was an extraordinary night with frankly, no one film completely cleaning up - although Les Miz came closest with 3. In the TV world it was a bit different with Homeland coming up again and again.

The other award in the book to movie category was Michael Danna's win for his gorgeous Life of Pi score.
The show itself was fantastic as entertainment; Tina Fey and Amy Poehler absolutely ruled, which we knew they would. Talk about fresh! Hilarious without being super bitchy. I had a blast watching and 'live tweeting from my couch' last night. I've never done that before. I lost power about halfway through - my last tweet was sent out at 6:53 PST when Lena Dunham won Best Actress in her HBO comedy series, Girls. Then the show went on to win Best Comedy!

While I had a good time tweeting, I was almost relieved when my electronics went kaput so I could kick back, sip some champagne and watch the show. I'm pretty good at multi-tasking but I did feel that every time I was busy typing and tweeting, I was missing something. Thank God I didn't miss that grumpy Gus look from Tommy Lee Jones when Will Ferrell and Kristin Wiig were fooling around with the Best Actress/Comedy category! How about you? Does tweeting take you out of the experience or does the joy of the conversation make you take to twitter to express yourself?

Who else won? Take a look at all the winners here.

Congrats Les Miz!

On the Road Again: Wondrous Words Wednesday

Posted on 00:40 by Unknown

My words for Wondrous Words Wednesday come from On the Road again this week.  And once again when I tried to look up one of words that was new to me, I couldn't find it in the dictionary. Perhaps it was slang back in the day but my hunch is Kerouac created the word to convey exactly what he meant.
To play along visit Kathy at BermudaOnion.net and post words new to you in your reading.

Scrubbled:  "Reopen no old wounds, be as if you had never returned and looked in to me - to see my laboring humilities, my few scrubbled pennies - hungry to grab, quick to deprive, sullen, unloved, mean minded son of my flesh."
Btw, that's Sal raving on the street, hungry and delirious, after Mary Lou ditches him in San Francisco.
I couldn't find scrubbled in the dictionary but context says they were hard earned, almost as if they were dug up from filthy streets. Any other ideas?

Esculence: "There were seafood places out there where the buns were hot, and the baskets were good enough to eat too; where the menus themselves were soft with foody esculence as though dipped in hot broths and roasted dry and good enough to eat too."
Actually, esculence is not really a word. The word is esculent and it means suitable for use as a food, edible. Kerouac made it into a noun;  I think I am correct in saying that the menus are in fact, soft with foody foodiness!

Ah, that Kerouac. By the way, there's an indie film coming soon based on his book Big Sur, the semi autobiographical story of Kerouac's retreat into alchoholism after On the Road was published.  Josh Lucas, Kate Bosworth star with Jean-Marc Barr as Kerouac. Here's the trailer for the movie's debut at Sundance.  Pretentious or moody and glorious?

"Where'd You Go Bernadette?" goes to the movies

Posted on 21:24 by Unknown

Scott Neustadter and
Michael H. Weber

I just heard that Where'd You Go, Bernadette is en route to the big screen via the writing duo behind 500 Days of Summer.
Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber (left)  are also said to be writing the adaptation for John Green's The Fault in Our Stars so I'm doubly excited!
I have to say I'm a bit surprised that Maria Semple isn't writing the screenplay herself considering her Hollywood roots; she's written for hilarious television shows like Arrested Development, Mad About You, and the Ellen show.  I wonder if she just wasn't interested; perhaps knowing Hollywood all too well???

By the way, Where'd You Go, Bernadette is being financed in part by the 25 year old daughter of multi-billionaire Oracle founder, Larry Ellison. Megan Ellison through her newly formed company Annapurna Pictures has been producing films like crazy of late: The Master, Zero Dark Thirty, Lawless (based on the book The Wettest County in the World) and Killing Them Softly. Her critics say she is pumping too much money on what should be smaller scale films while filmmakers whose projects are outside typical mainstream Hollywood are appreciative of the helping hand. She's very private and doesn't do interviews; I wonder how hands off she is terms of her projects. Her taste level is obviously good; I wouldn't be surprised at all to see her become a real powerhouse in the years to come.

Do you want to play casting couch with me? Who should be the hilariously agoraphobic Bernadette? And is she really as fabulous a character as she sounds? I better start reading!
