World War Z; My personal connection to Brad Pitt - ha!

Posted on 21:00 by Unknown

Brook's name is nice and big!
Brad Pitt: Zombie Fighter
World War Z book fans take note: the Brad Pitt movie based on Max Brook's book that was so awful that Paramount  plunked down another $20 million for re-shoots which most everyone said would not work, actually opened this weekend to generally favorable reviews! Deadline talked to the film's director, Marc Forster, about the whole horrific process and how the re-shoots helped return the movie to a more book-faithful and meaningful tale. And while it's not my kind of book, I do get a kick out of the fact that Brad Pitt sent the zombie novel to the director, so keen was he to do it. You can read the entire interview below; I've cut and paste it from Deadline.com but first, my personal connection.
Yes, I knew Brad when.
No. He wouldn't know me from Adam.
Brad Pitt and Elizabeth McGovern
coupled up onscreen in The Favor
Did I ever tell you how I had a short lived 'career' as a production coordinator and that I worked on one of Brad Pitt's early movies, The Favor, co-starring Elizabeth McGovern Bill Pullman, and Harley Jane Kozak? We shot The Favor  in late 1991 in and around Portland, Oregon right after Brad's break out performance in Thelma and Louise which was filmed earlier that same year. It just wasn't that great - mainly due to Ken Wahl starring as 'the other man' for Harley Jane Kozak but in any case the film was kept on the shelf and wasn't released until 1994. The non-opener didn't hold Brad Pitt back.
Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis coupled up
for real in the early 90's
He was with Juliette Lewis at the time and the story of Brad, with the ten years younger Juliette Lewis beside him, driving all the way up from  L.A. in a sexy little powder blue sports car, had every female on set, from savvy L.A. based producers to local hires, daydreaming about the gorgeous but strangely shy guy who really knew how to wear a pair of metal frame glasses. (See image above!)

This photo doesn't do justice to the bar at
the Heathman Hotel in Portland, Oregon.
On one incredible evening Brad, Elizabeth McGovern, my then-boss Christa, and a few more of us went to see Melissa Etheridge playing in town. Can I remember the venue? No - it was 20 something years ago -  I can't, but I do recall the evening was organized because one of the producer types was crushing on Elizabeth. What stands out most to me now is just how quiet and completely devoid of stud-attitude Brad was. He just seemed, oh brother, 'nice'. We all had drinks in what I remember as a warm wood-panelled bar in the dignified elegance of the Heathman Hotel in downtown Portland. The picture of the bar to the left doesn't capture that deep, rich feeling of my memories but again 20 years ago ... the good ol days especially because we can't recall them exactly. That was all I saw of Brad
Brad and Elizabeth
Pitt off set; but there was another evening where a good number of us went to dinner at Dan + Louis Oyster Bar, a Portland tradition since 1907! Elizabeth came along - the same producer crushing on her - and I experienced first hand how unnerving dining out can be to the famoso among us. The diners couldn't take their eyes off her; do you have any idea how difficult it is to talk or eat or act in any natural manner whatsoever with a roomful of eyes watching your every move?

Fame is a curse, I tell you!
The Deadline article
"When Marc Forster was a kid, he was fascinated by how a collective swarming movement made everything from ants to cancer cells more potent. Those images informed the depiction of the hordes of zombies in World War Z. It had never occurred to Forster that the same phenomenon could happen to his movie. Unsubstantiated reports about overruns, creative clashes and re-shoots cropped up and then mutated and spread virally on the web. It got to the point where the question was no longer would WWZ work, but how cataclysmic a failure it might be. That began turning around when Paramount began showing the film, and it’s not a big factor as the film opens today. But what was it like for a director to get caught in such an unprecedented media maelstrom, a lot of which was based on some truth, and some inaccurate or exaggerated reporting?
“I never went through anything like that, not on Quantum Of Solace, not on anything,” Forster said during a break from promoting WWZ in Russia. “I would read that Brad Pitt and I had no communication, and we would look at each other and say, where could this come from? Is somebody just making up these stories? When articles like those come out and start spreading, it causes you to take a look at yourself, but the thing is, I never doubted the movie, or my own intuition. So few original things get made on this scale. This isn’t a sequel, it isn’t based on a superhero in a comic book. We saw it as an opportunity to take a genre and create something new and unique within it. That challenge excites me, but uniqueness always comes with criticism. As a filmmaker, all you can do is hope you get to the point where people feel as excited and as passionate about the film as you felt making it. Sure, we felt like the media wanted the project to fail, but we knew what we had, and we felt it would work. Then came the first preview, and the movie played like gangbusters.”

Some of those reports implied that Forster was a passive participant once he and studio brass went into the editing room and decided that a colossal, bloody battle scene in Russia was loud, bloody, and unsatisfying. Other rumors were he didn’t even do the reshoots. Forster denies those rumors. Certainly, there was tension. How often does a studio like Paramount pull a picture out of its release calendar and commit another $20 million or so to create and shoot a new climax? But Forster said they were all in lockstep, working with scribes Damon Lindelof and Drew Goddard on an ending that aimed to be quieter, but more intense. When they left, Christopher McQuarrie also lent a hand in the writing.
“The original third act, with its big battle, was like every Hollywood movie,” he said. “It’s that big set piece, and it’s all about bigger and louder than everything else that came before it. I always felt that the set piece in Israel that happens earlier was the key action sequence in the film. It takes place in Southern Jerusalem, the birthplace of humanity, and then everything implodes and leaves you feeling, we can’t beat them, this is the end of humanity. That had to be the biggest set piece in the movie. Damon, when he saw the Israel sequence, had the same response, that you had to wind it down from there. Damon and Drew wrote what became exactly the movie I had in my head. It became a more personal journey, where you could connect with Brad in what felt like a haunted house setting. This way, the tension always shifts in the movie, but it never peaks, like a nice piece of music. I haven’t seen that quietly intense an ending in a blockbuster-size film before.”

Forster said the decision to scrap the big battle happened quickly and wasn’t some big drawn out spat. “We went to the editing room, looked at the footage, and we never tested that battle sequence,” Forster said. “Paramount was good with that. We all said, let’s not spend money on all that CG needed to finish that sequence, let’s spend the money instead on shooting a very simple, personal ending.” Forster said the result was in keeping with the original vision of the film that he and Pitt talked about when the actor/producer first came to him with the Max Brooks book. “When Brad sent me the book, I felt it was different, and that it was an opportunity to not just make another zombie movie, but to do something new. I wanted to create images we’d not seen before, from the way the zombies moved, to the way they swarm in Jerusalem, just different than anything done before in the genre. And the moment I’d heard the studio was willing to move forward with a more quiet haunted house ending which we pitched them, I was so relieved and happy. This movie plays well, but it’s different from every blockbuster out there. It’s the intense fun ride that we intended it to be, but it has unexpected moments. And after Jerusalem, you are so exhausted that to have added another big battle would have been repetitive, and it would have left you feeling exhausted.”

Another widely reported “fact” Forster refuted was that he and his cohorts were ordered by the studio to change the origin of the zombie outbreak from China, as Brooks’s book had it. The reports maintained the studio didn’t want to risk offending a Chinese government that determines which films have access to theaters in the country. “We threw a lot of countries around, Korea, Russia, India, China, but no one actually said that to us. We were never given a mandate that we couldn’t use China as that country. It was a purely creative decision we made to not have finding  patient zero be the film’s focus. We are still not sure whether or not WWZ will play in China or not, but we wanted nothing offensive against China or any other country. Those were creative choices.”
In Quantum of Solace and now WWZ, Forster has now made two movie movies far afield from his breakout film Monster’s Ball. WWZ, he feels, combines the best of those worlds. “Monster’s Ball was distinguished by those character performances, and what I love most about this movie is watching Brad’s character turn from everyday man into the reluctant hero,” Forster said. “We were able to incorporate those quiet character moments that I love, and it all came together in a way that made me really happy. Even some of what I went through with the press was a good lesson, I suppose. Obviously, everybody coming at you with constant negativity is daunting. If I had thought the movie wouldn’t work, it would have made me sad. But I felt so good about what I had, and none of those other people had seen the movie except for us. We figured other people would eventually see the same thing and we would be fine. I also think while negative buzz affects the inside Hollywood community, the movie going audience, the one in the middle of the country, they’re not influenced by this or even by critics, necessarily. They form their own opinions. And if your movie is good, they will be texting their friends. That earned word of mouth is what is important.”

Homer's The Odyssey ... in space?!

Posted on 19:14 by Unknown

No Togas allowed!

What would Homer say if he knew that Warner Brothers was going to set their planned adaptation of The Odyssey in space?  Yes, in space.

The studio has just hired James DiLapo - a recent NYU grad and rising star - to write the script re-imagining the classic (in the truest sense of the word) tale of Odysseus' fight to return home from the wars as a futuristic epic. Back when Brad Pitt starred as Achilles in TROY, (which was really Homer's The Illiad) he was attached to this project too but that's in the past. A shame really. I wouldn't mind seeing Brad Pitt sans toga!

Top Ten Update

Posted on 00:07 by Unknown
In my post, 10 books to Read before you see the movie, I told you that Killing Them Softly was coming out in October.  They've just changed the date to November 20th. The Brad Pitt movie is based on Cogans Trade, the crime novel written by crime writer extraordinaire, George V. Higgins.

Here's the lowdown from Random House:
A hard-hitting, tour-de force tale of the mob and the man who makes sure their rules are the only rules, by the American master of crime George V. Higgins.

Jackie Cogan,(played by Pitt) is an enforcer for the New England mob. When a high-stakes card game is heisted by unknown hoodlums, Cogan is called in to “handle” the problem. Moving expertly and ruthlessly among a variety of criminal hacks, hangers-on, and bigger-time crooks—a classic cast of misfits animated by Higgins’s hilarious, cracklingly authentic dialogue—Cogan gets to the root of the problem and, with five consecutive shots from a Smith & Wesson thirty-eight Police Special, restores order to his corner of the Boston underworld.

Combining his remarkable wit and a singular ability to show criminal life as it is lived, George V. Higgins builds an incredible story of crime to an unforgettable climax.

First photo from Brad Pitt produced Twelve Years a Slave

Posted on 16:20 by Unknown
The first photo from Twelve Years a Slave has shown up on twitter.
It looks like Beasts of the Southern Wild star Quvenzhané Wallis is playing the daughter in the Steve McQueen (Hunger, Shame) film 12 Years a Slave. The film based on Solomon Northup's account of being kidnapped and sold into slavery in the mid - 1800's  stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon Northup, along with Brad Pitt (who also produces) Michael Fassbender, Paul Dano, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti, Garret Dillahunt, Sarah Paulson and Scoot McNairy. Production is underway down in New Orleans so keep your eyes out if you head down to the big easy this summer. Can you believe this cast!
According to First Look,  "The Film Stage recently found a tweet from @lesterzeigler of this photo of Ejiofor on set with Quvenzhané as the Northrup family.
While he doesn't explicitly state it's Quvenzhané, you can definitely tell it's her. Her Beasts co-star Dwight Henry also recently joined the cast. Lester Zeigler's tweet states: "#12yearsaslave, Northup family, on set in French Quarter, McQueen is a genius." Love to hear this kind of early buzz, especially when it comes with a first look photo! Shadow and Act confirms the casting and adds that the other actress seen is Kelsey Scott."
12 Years a Slave

McQueen's adaptation of Twelve Years a Slave is co- written by John Ridley.

Cameron Diaz about to join Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbinder in Cormac McCarthy movie

Posted on 09:00 by Unknown
UPDATED May 9, 2012: If you are Cormac MCarthy and you're the writer behind The Road and No Country for Old Men and Ridley Scott wants to direct your first original script, I suppose it is no surprise that your work will attract a stunning A list cast of characters. According to Deadline, Cameron Diaz is just about to sign on the dotted line "to join the spectacular cast of The Counselor, the Ridley Scott-directed drama based on the original script by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy. She will join Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz. It is a strong supporting role she’ll play, named Malkina. Fassbender plays the title role of a respected lawyer who thinks he can dip a toe into the drug business without getting sucked down, which proves to be a life threatening decision."
UPDATED from my February 12 post:
The news just in from Deadline.com is that Michael Fassbender (Shame) has committed to star with Ridley Scott directing! Insiders are saying it's No Country for Old Men on steroids and Fassbender seems like just the guy to do it.
Hopefully they'll have something out by early next year unless they speed through production and post as quickly as they've done everything else and get it out late 2012!
Cormac McCarthy, the Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Road, and two other books which have been turned into films ( No Country for Old Men, and All the Pretty Horses)  was due to turn in his latest manuscript to his agents. According to Deadline the agents were shocked to find, not a novel, but a script. The Counselor  is that script, one which is speeding its way through the process. Ridley Scott has committed to direct AND Scott wants Michael Fassbender to play the title role. McCarthy turned in his script in December, Scott is looking to begin May 1st.

Deadline says  "The Counselor is reminiscent of the rough and tumble world depicted in the Oscar-winning adaptation of McCarthy’s novel No Country For Old Men. The protagonist is a respected lawyer who thinks he can dip a toe in to the drug business without getting sucked down. It is a bad decision and he tries his best to survive it and get out of a desperate situation."

Said producer, Steve Schwartz “Since McCarthy himself wrote the script, we get his own muscular prose directly, with its sexual obsessions. It’s a masculine world into which, unusually, two women intrude to play leading roles. McCarthy’s wit and humor in the dialogue make the nightmare even scarier. This may be one of McCarthy’s most disturbing and powerful works.”

The Morning After ... my night at the Oscars

Posted on 17:23 by Unknown

This was my first time at the Oscars as a guest - I had gone once before, years ago, as a seat filler which is a lousy way to go to the Oscars, believe me. This was different, so exciting! Naturally, I had to get all gussied up for the event! And I brought my iPhone so I could sneak a few shots of the preceedings. My brother, who works for the Academy, invited me as his guest so I couldn't get too obnoxious! Driving up Hollywood Blvd was crazy! The street was not only closed off to all but Oscar traffic but cyclone fencing had been put up along the sidewalks making sure no pedestrians went running into the road so they could get run over by George Clooney's limo. I guess. I'm not really sure why that was necessary. Not exactly glamorous, is it? Lots of cops. Lots of valet parkers.

As we pulled up, the valets helped us out of the car and led us to the red carpet which ran down the middle of Hollywood Blvd for about a half block before it arrived at Hollywood and Highland. Since we weren't in a limo, we were surprised to see Jennifer Lopez get out of the car ahead of us. It wasn't a limo, just some high-end SUV. She looked gorgeous from behind, her gown was stunning if a teensy bit see-thru. I tried to get a shot but it was really awkward trying for a picture of her butt! She was equally gorgeous as she turned and we saw her face.
There was an unbelievable amount of cheering from the crowd gathered at the corner, screaming, yelling J Lo, J Lo.   As we joined the throng going through security we saw Meryl Streep, Michael Fassbender. Went through security and  it was much like going on an airplane except we didn't have to remove our shoes, and we all got electronically frisked! Even JLo, even Fassbender, even Meryl Streep!

On the carpet itself we saw Cameron Diaz, Gwyneth Paltrow, Natalie Portman, Colin Firth, Christopher Lloyd, Michael Moore, Octavia Spencer, George Clooney and Stacy Kiebler. The crowd called out Steven Spielberg's name with just as much fervor as they did George's. George. GEORGE. GEORGE! GEORGE!!
How we can expect our stars to stay humble when they are treated this way, I really don't know.

As we made our way along the red carpet and upstairs to the "Formerly known as" Kodak theatre - I realized I had dropped my ticket along the way. Even though I'd had to show it to get this far, they wouldn't allow us in so we had to go back and get a duplicate ticket - thank heavens the folks in charge of security knew my bro!
Along the way we saw Viola Davis limping slowly up the stairs - her gold 5 inch heels were def cramping her style and she had to be helped along. Then we saw Sandy Bullock, rushing in late, and she tripped and almost fell flat on her face. She still looked dazzling though!
As we ran back, the red carpet was empty except for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie who were taking their time and talking to all the reporters. Brad (and earlier Octavia Spencer) were the only stars I saw walk across the carpet to greet their screaming fans in the grandstands!
It was an amazing night! We made it back in time to arrive before they closed the doors - I really wasn't worried because I knew Brad and Angie were behind us and no way the Academy would start the show without this Hollywood royalty couple in their first row seats. They entered at the last moment and were seated right in front of Martin Scoresese who they talked quite a bit with throughout the evening. George and Stacy were on the other end of the first row flanked by Sandra Bullock on one side, Michelle Williams on the other.
And there they stayed, Clooney and Pitt both remained planted in their seats and didn't hit the bar once! We went a couple of times but with the exception of Christopher Lloyd didn't see any famous faces. If any of the writers were there, I didn't recognize them!
I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the show though, from Billy Crystal's opening to the amazing Cirque de Soleil act and even The Artist stealing Best Picture from my beloved Hugo. Oh well! I was happy to see that the Best Adapted Screenplay winner matched with the results of my tiny poll, with The Descendants winning it and Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, taking the stage. We all thought Angelina was hilarious striking her leg forward pose, Faxon and Rash duplicating it were funny too. So happy to hear Alexander Payne give a shout out to novelist Kaui Hart Hemmings!
On the way out, I stopped by the womens' room where I saw Owen Wilson waiting for his mother. That made me smile, that he took his mother to the Academy Awards and that like any other son, he had to wait for her before going to the party. Even if in this case the party was the very glamorous Governor's Ball. I saw their little group ride down the elevator together. I was a happy camper as I gave Oscar's tush a love pat goodbye.
Thank you, big brother, for taking me to the Oscars. I had the time of my life!
